Backlash Against New 'Smart Guns' Being Sold In California
By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon
The Armatrix iP1 smart gun is a new technology that offers great promise for reducing gun violence. Electronic chips inside this gun communicate with a watch that can be bought with this gun, making it impossible to fire the gun if the watch is not close by. These guns have the potential to reduce unintentional shootings and suicides, and stolen guns would be useless unless thieves steal the watches. The Oak Tree Gun Club near Los Angeles recently began selling this gun.
However, some folks have attacked and threatened the store for selling a smart gun, and claim that it infringes on their Second Amendment rights. This is despite the fact that the Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment is perfectly compatible with reasonable gun laws and regulations.
