Fact Sheets on Domestic Violence and Guns for 27 States
By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon
Today the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a landmark hearing on the intersection between domestic violence and gun violence. The Center for American Progress and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence just released fact sheets for 27 states that provide extensive information about domestic violence and the large role access to guns plays in that violence in each state.
Many state laws have loopholes that allow dangerous domestic abusers and stalkers to have access to guns. From 2001 to 2012, 6,410 women were murdered in America by an intimate partner with a gun. A key factor in reducing murders of women is preventing dangerous domestic abusers from accessing guns.
